Barbers, fruit shops, dry cleaners and bowling alleys; restaurants, shooting clubs and repair shops. Dylan Pf's first photobook collects a playful series of shop interiors predominantly in the inner-west and western suburbs of Sydney. From within the clutter of bananas, icons, paintings, handwritten notes, shrines and bric-a-brac emerges a protrait of mingling eras and cultures—the lively excess of immigrant aesthetics, the decadence of the '80s, the gaudy beauty of kitsch. In these shops (many of which no longer exist), the public mercantile space is submerged by its private, almost domestic detail. At once a personal and historical record, the intimacy of these photographs—despite the absence of people—offers us the colourful, chaotic proof of everyday living.
